Garmin Strap Compatibility Guide
Choosing the right replacement strap for your Garmin watch comes down to two things: the connector type and the lug width. This guide explains both so you can shop with confidence.
1. Connector Types: QuickFit vs Spring Bar
Garmin QuickFit
QuickFit is Garmin's tool-free, snap-in connector system. Straps clip directly onto integrated pins on the watch case — no spring-bar tool required. You simply press the release button on the underside of the strap and snap the new one into place.
- Typical series: Fenix 5 onwards, Forerunner 935, Forerunner 645, Vivoactive 4 onwards, and many newer models.
- How to identify it: Look for a small rectangular plastic or metal release tab on the underside of each strap end where it meets the case. If it has this tab, your watch uses QuickFit.
- Width options: QuickFit comes in 20 mm, 22 mm, and 26 mm variants — the size is part of the watch's specification, so check your model below.
Standard Spring Bar
Older and slimmer Garmin models use traditional spring bars — the same metal pins found on most fashion and sport watches. Changing the strap requires a spring-bar tool to compress the pin and slide the strap free.
- Typical series: Earlier Forerunner and Vivoactive models (e.g. Forerunner 245, Vivoactive 3 variants).
- How to identify it: If there is no release tab on the strap, and the strap sits inside two small lugs on either side of the case, it uses standard spring bars.
2. Strap Width: 20 mm vs 22 mm
Strap width is measured between the lugs (the small horns on the case where the strap attaches). Getting this right is essential — a strap that is 1 mm too wide will not fit.
| Width | Common Garmin models |
|---|---|
| 20 mm | Fenix 7S, Fenix 8 (43 mm), Vivoactive 4s, Forerunner 165, and other "S" (small) variants |
| 22 mm | Fenix 7, Fenix 7X, Fenix 8 (47 mm & 51 mm), Vivoactive 3, Vivoactive 4, Vivoactive 5, Forerunner 645, Forerunner 935, Forerunner 245 |
Always verify your watch's lug width in Garmin's official product specifications if you are unsure.
3. When Is an Adapter Needed?
You may need an adapter in the following situations:
- QuickFit watch, non-QuickFit strap: Some third-party straps include a QuickFit adapter so a standard spring-bar strap can be used on a QuickFit watch. Check the product listing to confirm adapter compatibility.
- Width mismatch: Adapters that step down from 22 mm to 20 mm exist but can affect the look and fit. We recommend using the correct native width where possible.
- Non-standard lug shape: A small number of Garmin models have proprietary lug shapes that require the manufacturer's own strap. If a strap listing does not reference your specific model, check before purchasing.
